Cider & Perry tasting notes

We’re delighted to be able to bring you a mouth-watering selection of ciders and perries this year, including “Best of British” products that scooped awards at CAMRA’s 2011 National Cider and Perry Championships, some old favourites from previous years, our first ever Yorkshire ciders and a couple of intriguing blends.

CIDER

VIRTUAL ORCHARD HARD CORE DRY CIDER – 7.0% ABV

Champion Cider of Britain 2011.  We’ve battled the elements and wild beasts and walked over hot coals to bring you this scarce champion cider from Buckinghamshire.  This fruity dry cider is made from 100% pure English apple juice. The fresh juice is allowed to ferment slowly using naturally occurring yeasts, a process that can take from 4 to 6 months. The cider is then allowed to mature for at least a further 9 to 12 months before being put into the barrel with a small amount of raw cane sugar to help balance the acidity whilst allowing the natural dryness to remain.

GWYNT Y DDRAIG BLACK DRAGON MEDIUM DRY CIDER - 7.2% ABV

CAMRA National Silver Medal Winner 2010 and 2011. This special reserve cider has been hand crafted in Wales from cider apples grown by traditional methods in ageing orchards. The juice is fermented and matured in oak barrels, producing a cider rich in colour, body and flavour, with a fresh, fruity aroma.

HARTLAND’S SWEET CIDER - 6% ABV

CAMRA National Bronze Medal Winner 2011.  Real farmhouse cider that has been produced by the same family for generations. Hazy orange in colour, sweet and delicious.

MOORLAND’S MEDIUM DRY CIDER - 6.4% ABV

The Boston Spa beer festival has always been a showcase for Yorkshire’s finest ales so we’re delighted to be able to add two Yorkshire ciders to this year’s offering.  Producer Rob Gibbon uses mainly Yorkshire grown apples which give the cider a definitive regional style and a softer taste than West Country ciders where the apples used have more tannins. This medium cider has a distinctive appley taste with a slightly dry finish.

MOORLANDS – MEDIUM SWEET CIDER - 6.4% ABV

So on to our second Yorkshire cider.  Rob Gibbon first made cider as a one-off but luckily for us it proved to be so popular that he now produces it on a regular basis. Again the use of Yorkshire grown apples gives the cider a definitive regional style and softer taste compared with other ciders. This one has a sweeter finish than its drier partner but retains a distinctive flavour of apples.

BROADOAK MOONSHINE MEDIUM SWEET CIDER - 7.5% ABV

Our best-selling cider in previous years, this Somerset classic possesses a very pale colour, almost completely clear in appearance. It boasts a soft apple aroma with a sweet apple flavour and hints of lemon. The high alcohol content isn’t evident in the flavour so proceed with caution!

PERRY

GWYNT Y DDRAIG 2 TREES PERRY - 4.5% ABV

CAMRA National Silver Medal Winner 2011. This oak aged, Welsh perry has a lovely golden appearance, a caramel nose, a hint of honey on the palate and a dry finish.  Light in alcohol content and very easy to drink, Two Trees is the perfect ‘session’ perry.

OLIVER’S MEDIUM PERRY - 6.5% ABV

CAMRA National Bronze Medal Winner 2011. Tom Oliver, also the tour manager for the band the Proclaimers, produces excellent easy drinking ciders and perries which are well balanced.  This fine example is a full-on, still, medium dry blended perry with a rich feel and intensity in the mouth.

BROADOAK PREMIUM SWEET PERRY - 7.5% ABV.

This CAMRA National Gold Medal winner from 2009 has always gone down well at the Boston Spa Beer Festival.  It was also one of the fastest sellers at the 2011 Great British Beer Festival.  It has an attractively clear appearance with the slightest hint of a green shade. Its superb, strong pear aroma is complemented by a sweet perry pear taste.

BLENDS

GWYNT Y DDRAIG MEDIUM PYDER - 6.0% ABV.

A true rarity! An out of the ordinary blend of apple and pear juice fermented and matured in wood. A delicious alternative to cider or perry with a unique taste all of its own.

SANDFORD ORCHARD FANNY’S BRAMBLE - 4.0% ABV

Blackberries and apples… a marriage made in Devon. The berry richness chimes effortlessly with the smooth apple cider. Just cider apples and blackberries balanced with care and producing a cheeky purple drop of Devon delight.
